Getting started as a Freelance
I travelled over from Northern Ireland last weekend for the NUJ freelance course and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it.
I've only recently gone freelance after 12 years working as a staffer at a number of papers, including the Belfast Telegraph.
One of the most practical pieces of advice I drew from the training course was the 30-day challenge in relation to a constant stream of pitches.
I was reading the Sunday Times Home section last weekend when I thought it would be interesting to do a feature on the peace process in Northern Ireland and what it has done for the property market here.
I pitched the idea to them on Monday morning and was contacted yesterday to say they want a 1,200 piece by next Monday. Result!
I could get very used to this freelance life. However, I know there are very many tough days ahead so I will certainly not be getting carried away.
