Making Internet journalism pay

This is a one-day course designed to provide an overview of new funding models in journalism and to train journalists in the practicalities of generating income directly from their own editorial. This will include instruction in setting up blogs, creating Google ad accounts, creating affiliate advertising accounts, and profiting from Amazon.

Students will set up a blog and appropriate accounts and be in a position to generate income by the end of the course.
Students will be encouraged to consider and discuss the wider opportunities for journalism that new funding models afford.
Students will consider the impact and lightly effectiveness of income generation models. The course does NOT cover how to design and create websites.
The practical focus of the course is on profiting from micro publishing, but this is considered within the context of funding of everything from personal sites to the News International paywall.

Who should attend?

The course is for anyone who already has an editorially-based website that they are seeking to monetize, or anyone who is considering setting one up. It is also for those who want to develop a framework to consider the future funding of quality journalism.

Qualifications

Students should have basic journalistic skills, and should know how to use the internet. We will be using Macs for the course, but students who use Windows machines should have no problems.
Some familiarity with HTML [Hypertext Markup Language – the code used to create web pages] or web design with a program such as Dreamweaver would be helpful, but it is not essential.

Expected learning outcomes

Students will have a greater awareness of the range of ways to make money from internet journalism and will be able to describe the revenue models of several successful news sites. They will understand how to set up a Blogger blog, and how to add Google ads to that site. They will understand how Google ads work and will have some appreciation of how to maximize revenue from such advertising models. They will also know how to set up other affiliate marketing relationships with companies such as Affiliate Window and Commission Junction. They will have set up, and be able to repeat setting up, a revenue generating website that pays into their own bank account.
