Business for Journalists

Gary James Merrill
You can’t escape big business these days. Whether you report on health, education, defence, sport, fashion, music or even food, large companies are the dominant players. Unfortunately, many journalists don’t have a business background and, as a result, the language and principles of business are often misunderstood.

Designed and presented by a business journalist and university teacher, this dynamic, exciting and engaging one-day course provides an invaluable introduction to the world of business. It will help attendees to improve their understanding of business, to learn how to be critical of large companies and, hence, become more effective journalists.

Course Overview:

  • The Simplicity of Business - basic concepts and terminology
  • Ownership and Control – shareholders, directors and management
  • Big Business Gets Bigger – growth, mergers, take-overs and acquisitions
  • Removing the Mystique of Finances – share price, profit, revenue and more
  • Can Large Companies Really Be Ethical? - a critique of Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Big Business and Government – companies, public services and taxpayers’ money
  • Asking the Right Questions – finding stories in an avalanche of corporate PR

Who Should Attend:

This course is specifically designed for journalists and PRs who have little or no prior knowledge about business. The course is very interactive and the teaching will be mixed with exercises. Questions are encouraged and the tutor will demonstrate concepts using real-life, recent examples from the news.

Qualifications

No prior knowledge of business or finance is required. You merely need the desire to improve your understanding of business and companies.

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have a much stronger understanding of corporate language, business principles and how companies operate. You will also be much more comfortable about asking probing questions of business people, CEOs and policy makers.

Further courses to consider

This course complements Economics for Journalists, which explains the basic concepts of economics and how economic policies affect our lives.
