Basic News-writing Skills

The course aims to improve your news writing skills regardless of your level of experience. The course moves from the basics to the best in this fast-paced but enjoyable and very practical one-day session.

The course covers:

· Origins of news structure – how it differs from other aspects of journalism

· Understanding your publication

· Understanding your readership or audience and the difference between real and target readerships

· How to plan a good news story

· How to structure and write a good story within deadlines

· Writing killer intros, hooks and delayed drop intros

· Purple prose – what is too much or too little? Use of adjectives

· Generating fresh news ideas in a jaded world

· Writing news for the web

Participants are welcome to bring along samples of their previous work if they wish.
