Writing your first book

Do you think you have a novel in you? Or maybe a non-fiction book? Course tutor Brendan Foley, author of the Best-seller Under the Wire will take you through the step and outline some pitfalls to be avoided in a lively, practical one-day intensive course.

The one day course covers:

  • The Big Idea – is it commercial enough to be worth the effort, but creatively strong enough to sustain your focus over a long time?
  • Research – know your subject, know the market and know the competition. Do you need any permissions?
  • Working full time or in spare time – techniques to maximize productivity and creativity
  • Mental gymnastics – how to stay sane and focused despite long deadlines and possible rejections
  • Structure – how to turn a daunting task into achievable objectives and ensuring continuity of style over weeks and months
  • Style – the right voice or voices for your book. How this differs from journalism or screenwriting. Specifics of fiction, biography and ghost-writing
  • Rewriting – taking a book to the next level. Knowing which criticism to accept or reject. The pros and cons of collaboration.
  • Agents – How to get one and what they can or can’t do for you
  • Publishers and self publishers – Outlets for your work, including film companies and online publishing and self publishing

Participants are welcome to bring along samples of their work if they wish.
