Organising for Recognition

This course is part of the NUJ officers’ programme, delivered in conjunction with the General Federation of Trade Unions and Ruskin College, Oxford. It is designed to develop the key skills and knowledge associated with being an effective and confident NUJ representative.

The course will be taught using highly interactive methods such as small group work, discussion and student-centred activities.

Topics on the course include;

· Understanding the Statutory Recognition Scheme
· Determining the Bargaining Unit
· Key Principles of a New Recognition Agreement
· Organising a Recognition Campaign

Who should attend?

All reps and members who would like to know more about developing a strategic approach to organising around recognition.

Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to want to learn more about how to build Chapel and Branch strength towards organising for recognition.

Expected learning outcomes

As this is an accredited course (3 open college network credits at levels 1, 2 or 3), the following learning outcomes will apply. This is what you can expect to have learnt by the end of the course;

· The key features of the Employment Relations Act 2004 as it affects trade union recognition.
· The framework for establishing a bargaining unit
· How to define the process for balloting arrangements
· How to develop good practice in organising and recruitment activity.
