Editorial management

This course will provide practical help for news and feature editors, for chief subs and those running supplements, for new producers and programme editors and for anyone running an editorial office. It will cover day-to-day issues, such as organising diaries, setting and managing deadlines, planning staff and freelances needs and overseeing budgets. And it will cover managing special events. But you will also learn about strategic management – about thinking ahead, redesigns and targeting new audiences, as well as dealing with your senior management and your staff. There will be a session on managing staff, including the basics of equal opportunities legislation, training and appraisals. The course will help you better lead your team.

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for journalists facing, or seeking, promotion that will give them a section, programme, department or desk to run, which might involve overseeing budgets, staff and other managerial issues. The course also suits those recently promoted, those who want to learn more about how others manage their departments and those considering new and better ways to manage.

Qualifications

None required but you will be expected to have had some experience of journalism and understand how offices and editorial departments run.

Expected Learning Outcomes

You will leave knowing how to choose the best management tools to suit your office and editorial team, how to deal with recruitment and training issues, how to deal with difficult issues, and when, and from where, you can find more help and advice. You will also have a basic grasp of employment and anti-discrimination legislation
