Aim for better freelance deals

Freelances need to do deals. Whether you are a writer, photographer, reporter, subeditor, broadcaster or whatever, you will benefit yourself if you understand what goes into making a deal and how you might improve on that first offer a client makes. This one-day course aims to help freelances negotiate better deals for themselves.

Through role-play exercises and discussion, participants will work on the skills and attitudes needed to try to get more money and improve other aspects of any deal. This will include:

  • thinking about fees

  • asking for more money

  • specifying expenses

  • understanding copyright

  • pitching ideas with deals in mind

  • setting payment dates

  • adding conditions

  • understanding the psychology of negotiations

  • coming up with scripts for situations

  • role plays to put ideas into practice


  • Who should attend
    Freelance journalists who want to try to improve the deals they make.

    Qualifications
    A desire to improve your deal-making skills.

  • An understanding of what it takes to negotiate better deals

  • Acquisition of greater confidence in your deal-making skills
