QuarkXpress 6 Introduction

Bernie Russell
An introduction to DTP using QuarkXPress

Content
This two-day course covers the fundamentals of QuarkXPress, the industry-standard design and editing software. The course looks at the principles behind Quark, file management, the mechanics driving Quark, menu options, palettes, constructing and editingpages, using colour, working with pictures and printing.

Who should attend
The course is for anyone working in, or planning to work in, newspaper and magazine production as a designer, writer, sub-editor or editor.

Qualifications
This is an introductory course. It is assumed that students will have little or no knowledge of QuarkXPress or similar programs.

Students should be familiar with the standard point-and-click, drag-and-drop interface of programs like MS Word e.g. they should know how to select, and edit and format text. It is helpful, though not necessary, to be familiar with Apple Macs.

Expected learning outcomes
Students will become familiar with the QuarkXPress interface, and will be able to customise its appearance and functions to suit their requirements.

They will understand the principles behind QuarkXPress, and the ways in which it differs from standard word-processing packages.

They will be able to create a document in QuarkXPress; design and lay out pages within that document; write, format and embellish text; and import text from other applications.

They will be able to import and manipulate images.

Further courses to consider

Introduction to InDesign CS – Even though QuarkXPress remains the DTP market leader, Adobe InDesign is proving a strong competitor. It could give you a real advantage to know both.

Adobe Photoshop – why not boost your image-editing skills alongside your design skills?
