Organise for Recruitment

Content

This course is part of the NUJ officers’ programme, delivered in conjunction with the General Federation of Trade Unions and Ruskin College, Oxford. It is designed to develop the key skills and knowledge associated with being an effective and confident NUJ representative.

The course will be taught using highly interactive methods, such as small group work, discussion and student centred activities.

Topics on the course will include:

  • Mapping your own workplace and identifying key areas for improvement in terms of organising and recruiting members
  • Considering the reasons why some members do not get involved in union activities
  • Developing arguments to persuade non members to join the NUJ
  • Preparing a local strategy for increasing members involvement and union membership
  • Developing and practising recruiting skills


Who should attend
All reps and activists who would like to develop or improve their Chapel or Branch organisation and recruitment.



Qualifications
No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to want to learn more about how to develop an effective organising and recruitment strategy.



Expected learning outcomes
As this is an accredited course (3 open college network credits at either levels 1, 2 or 3) the following learning outcomes will apply. This is what you can expect to have learnt by the end of the course.


  • a clearer picture of how the NUJ is organised at local level and how this can be improved
  • developed a range of arguments and skills to use in recruiting union members
  • developed a Chapel or Branch organising strategy for increasing membership density and retaining members.
