Develop your Freelance capabilities

You’ve been freelance as a writer or reporter or editor or similar for some time and you’re thinking about how you can continue to develop your capabilities now you’re in the middle of your career. You realise it might be helpful to come and spend a day talking with a tutor and other freelances about how you could explore new ways of working, new areas in which to work, new approaches to looking for work and generally how to go about revitalising and consolidating your freelance life. Notice that the emphasis is on developing approaches to working in a way that suits you and not about the nuts and bolts of freelancing as a business.

During the day we will talk about the following topics and more – with some exercises, too:

- considering different and more effective ways to work
- moving into new areas of work – and how you might acquire the skills to do so
- looking for the information you need to move forward
- coming up with streams of ideas to impress commissioning editors and other clients
- implementing the ideas you are coming up with
- drawing on the expertise of fellow freelances to help you see how to work more effectively

Your tutor is Humphrey Evans, who has taught on the NUJ’s introductory course Getting Started as a Freelance from its inception.

Who should attend?
People with some freelancing experience who now, in mid-career, want to take part in a day of structured thinking about how they can develop as freelances. The tutor’s expertise is in freelance writing and editing for print and websites so we are not inviting photographers or broadcasters on this course.
People just turning freelance, whether coming from a staff background or not, can think of going on “Getting Started as a Freelance” while “Pitch and Deal” is for those who want to concentrate on getting work and negotiating contracts.

Qualifications
A desire to extend your freelancing capabilities

Expected learning outcomes
Awareness of freelancing possibilities that you could develop

Further courses to consider
Develop Your Freelance Capabilities expands on the looking for work section of the NUJ’s introductory course Getting Started as a Freelance, the course which is intended for people just getting going or thinking about moving into freelancing. The one day course Pitch and Deal concentrates on approaching editors and handling negotiations. Look out too for courses on Tax/Finance, Copyright, Feature Writing, Rock Writing and a plethora of computer-linked skills.
