NUJ Officers Course Stage 1

Content
This course is part of the NUJ officers’ programme, delivered in conjunction with the General Federation of Trade Unions and Ruskin College, Oxford. It is designed to develop the key skills and knowledge associated with being an effective and confident NUJ representative.

The course will be taught using highly interactive methods, such as small group work, discussion and student centred activities.

It will cover the topics and issues essential to being a confident NUJ representative. Such as;

  • Identifying the main roles and responsibilities associated with being an NUJ representative
  • Understanding the structure of the NUJ, the NUJ’s role within the global trade union movement, and how members can progress within it
  • Knowing the contents of your collective agreements and identifying the key elements that makes up your grievance and disciplinary procedures
  • Developing a trade union approach to dealing with members problems


Who should attend?

All new reps as well as more experienced reps who would enjoy a skills refresher.

Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to want to know more about the role of and rights afforded to NUJ representatives.

Expected learning outcomes


As this is an accredited course (3 Open College Network credits at either levels 1, 2 or 3) the following learning outcomes will apply. This is what you can expect to have learnt by the end of the course.

  • Understand the role of an NUJ representative and what rights are afforded to them in law
  • Consider the components of collective agreements and how these can be applied when dealing with members problems
  • Review best practice when using disciplinary and grievance procedures to progress member’s cases
