Journalism: an Introduction for freelances and others

Humphrey Evans & Phil Sutcliffe
You have got yourself into freelance journalism and may, indeed, be making quite a go of it but have had no formal training. Now you realise there’s more to it than you thought. Maybe you began with a hobby, or political activism, or with a non-journalistic job – whether music, single-issue campaigning, or marine biology – and this has turned into a more career-like involvement. Or maybe your blog has just gone mainstream. Whatever the reason, you want to find out more about the various skills and awarenesses that flow into journalism.

During the day we will talk about topics involved in the practice of journalism, including those noted here. We will be asking you what you feel you need to know about and try to guide you towards finding answers. Note that the day is all about doing the actual journalism. If you are looking for information about finding work as a freelance, setting yourself up in business and negotiating with editors then you will be better off with the NUJ courses Getting Started as a Freelance and Pitch and Deal.

  • gathering information – what goes into standing a story up and checking whether a source is reliable

  • writing styles for news and features

  • finding out about upcoming events and celebrity movements

  • getting your hands on press releases, invites to publicity dos, accreditation to major events

  • arranging and conducting interviews face to face or on the phone

  • law and journalism – particularly libel

  • NUJ Code of Conduct and NUJ Press Card

Who should attend
Freelances and others who have little or no formal journalism training and want to find out how to develop their skills. Note that this course is aimed at writers/reporters and is not intended for photographers unless they are considering a career change. Note too that this course is about acquiring journalistic skills: anyone wanting advice on drumming up work as a freelance and doing deals should turn to the NUJ courses Getting Started as a Freelance and Pitch and Deal.

Qualifications
A desire to build up journalistic skills

Expected learning outcomes
Increased awareness of a number of journalistic skills and how to acquire them

Further courses to consider
Freelances at the beginning of their careers and staff on the verge of turning freelance could benefit from coming on the Getting Started as a Freelance one-day course which complements Journalism: an introduction for freelances and others by looking at the whole business of setting yourself up as a freelance journalist. Pitch and Deal, another one-day course, addresses ways of getting work and negotiating fees.
Have a look at the NUJ’s suite of courses for freelances, including workshops on Copyright, Tax and Freedom of Information, on the NUJ training website at www.nujtraining.org.uk.
