Public Relations Introduction

Who should attend
Those who are new to PR or journalists looking to move into this sector

Expected learning Outcomes
Participants should come away with an overview of the PR industry and some basic skills in writing press releases and targeting audiences

Course content
A general overview of different sectors including:

The role of PR in each sector and types of jobs.
Consultancy, local government, trade unions, private sector, higher education and health.

Skills
Identifying the skills needed for working in PR

To cover: media relations, writing, strategy and campaign planning and the resources available.

Specific skills
Writing press releases and targeting audiences

The basics of how to write a successful press release - spend time doing a practical exercise, putting together a release;
For targeting releases – a national newspaper journalist will go through the press releases received in a typical day to show what they look for and what works best.
