FEATURE WRITING Two-day special

Brendan Foley
FEATURE WRITING Two-day special

The course covers every aspect of how to write outstanding features, from understanding your audience, publication and subject, to research, writing and interview skills. It focuses on the importance of planning, structure and style and deals with every facet of writing outstanding features, from format to research, writing and interview skills. Once the basics are established, the course looks at advanced techniques, designed to make good features great.

The two day course is particularly valuable as it gives time to really get to grips with specific examples, including deconstructing the best and worst of features
The tutor offers to read a feature from each participant in advance and tailor the course to the specific needs of the group.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The course is open to a broad range of skills and experience. The course will be of most use to people who want to improve their feature writing skills, but should be valuable to anyone from relative newcomers to grizzled veterans.

Recent converts to feature writing from other branches of journalism are welcome, or those planning to move in that direction. Working feature writers who feel they have been thrown in at the deep end will also benefit and highly experienced feature writers often use the course to recharge their batteries or raise their game.

QUALIFICATIONS

No formal qualifications, but some journalistic experience and a sense of humour.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The ability to approach ANY subject and turn it in to a readable feature, appropriate to the audience or readership. In short, more creative features, and less ‘writing by numbers’. The course is usually very enjoyable too.
