Writing for the Web

Chris Wheal
Content

This is a two-day course designed to train people in how to write, edit and mark up copy for different types of websites, such as news sites, PR sites, corporate sites etc.

Students will produce dummy copy for classroom use, and will also be publishing copy on a website via a content management system.
They will compare print and online publications, plus they will look at recent developments in web technology, such as RSS, blogs, citizen journalism, etc.
Students will be encouraged to produce their own blog.
Students will consider the impact of layout and visual material but the course will NOT cover how to design and create websites

Who should attend?

The course is for anyone writing/editing for, or planning to write/edit for a website; or who wants to add to their skills portfolio.

Qualifications

Students should have basic journalistic skills, and should know how to use the internet. We will be using Macs for the course, but students who use Windows machines should have no problems.
A knowledge of basic HTML [Hypertext Markup Language – the code used to create web pages] would be helpful, but it is not essential.

Expected learning outcomes

Students will be able to write and edit copy for publication on the web, and to add basic html mark-up, such as text formatting instructions, bullet list code, and hypertext links to that copy.
They will know to use a basic content management system.
They will be aware of recent developments affecting web publishing, and of some of the implications of these developments for journalists.
